Federal Marriage Amendment Falls Short
Wednesday, July 14, 2004
“Isn’t that the ultimate homeland security, standing up and defending marriage?” Those are the words of Senator Rick Santorum. As the Yahoo! News article reports, the vote was 48-50, 12 short of the 60 needed to keep the measure alive. How many people will breathe a sigh or relief when they hear that? I know I did. I’m not among the group of people who were certain an amendment such as that one would never pass. The Patriot Act has taken the certainty out of my opinions. No, Mr. Santorum, marriage is not the ultimate homeland security. Protecting homosexual couples from your brand of federally regulated discrimination might be a good choice though. President Bush and his puppet masters should have a lot more on their minds than homosexual couples getting hitched. If I hear one more person mention “activist judges” I’m going jab my own freaking eyeball out. Stop feeding us that line of bullshit. Aside from that, did the word activist become dirty the same time liberal did?

In the long run I’m confused about who is getting used here. Is the Christian Right using their clout to manipulate conservative politicians in high places and further their agendas? Or are conservative politicians in high places using the clout of the Christian Right to further theirs? Maybe it’s an equal thing among them? One thing is sure though. It’s all a load of crap. I would be more worried about the federal government taking away the individual state held jurisdiction on marriage than I would be worried about activist judges. I have some words of advice for George W. Bush and the Christian Right. First off, to George W. Bush: Shut off your exploitation machine. What does it matter to you if I marry my roommate Josh? He’s a slob anyway. Forget about it. How much more transparent can your agenda be? To the Christian Right: Shut off your discrimination machine. Who gives you the right to impose your brand of Christian morals on a population as diverse in culture and religious beliefs as the United States of America? You don’t have the right to override state authority on this issue anyway. Leave it alone. Let the states decide how and when gay marriage will be dealt with. |
The article quoted Senator Jeff Sessions as saying, “I don’t think it's going away after this vote. I think the issue will remain alive.” Sure it will. Just like the ban on flag burning has. Luckily I can still burn the American flag in protest. George Bush, I’m not done ranting to you yet. I won’t be distracted from shortcomings of this evil government. I won’t let issues like gay marriage distract me from the fact that our quality of education is poor and still declining, our unemployment, even at “normal” levels is a crying shame, and our overall healthcare treatment, not just for the homeless, veterans, senior citizens, mentally ill, or combinations thereof, is a freaking joke. I won’t be distracted from the fact that corporations treat the environment like shit and you pass environmental regulations in favor of the very same companies that destroy it. I won’t be distracted from the fact that half of our federal budget is spent on “defense” in the form of offensive actions like Afghanistan and Iraq that further your political ties to the corporations funding your campaign. I won’t be distracted, so just give up.
