"It's the world's smallest violin playing just for the environmentalists."
Bush promoted his Clear Skies Initiative again today at the White House. Clear Skies is a proposal which comes to blows with the current regulations set in the Clean Air Act. It's a general consensus that the President's initiative will do more to pollute the air than it will to clarify it.
Clear Skies is tricky in the fact that it will quickly limit pollution better than the current Clean Air Act. This makes it easy to defend to most people. It's marked as another brilliant action by our awesome President. The trouble comes with the fact that by pushing forward the timeframes set in the Clean Air Act, Clear Skies will weaken standards and reduce pollution far less than the current regulations over a long period of time. This makes it just a pathetic ruse which at first looks promising but after a few years puts the world at a greater and greater risk from dangerous air contaminants like sulfur and mercury.
The worst fact behind the initiative is that its biggest supporters are also the nation's biggest polluters. That should be enough to tell you something. Crammed full of obvious loopholes and hazardous rollbacks, Clear Skies is no more than another example of Bush's political actions which support a larger industrial agenda.
