I caught a glimpse of an article on Michael Moore's website today which had an excerpt taken from TomPaine.com. The original article titled "What Can $87 Billion Buy?" sheds light towards what a waste the war in Iraq is financially for America.
Several examples struck close to home. One was the fact that $87 billion is 8 times the total for Pell Grants in the United States. I receive about $4000 a year in Pell Grants and it is a lifesaver. Without the Pell Grant system, I'd be S.O.L. as far as my college career is concerned. The article mentions that the system only covers at most 40% of tuition costs, which is pretty accurate. Sadly though, there is a proposal brewing in Congress that will lower the award to 38%. Two percent of my award is only about $80 dollars, but that's $80 less.
Another example which bothers me is the fact that $87 billion dollars is 10 times the amount allotted for environmental protection which is currently at $7.6 billion, a drastic cut from the previous budget. If any of you out there are playing the George Bush Environmental Policy Drinking Game, this is the section titled Blatant Disregard which calls for each of you to chug straight from the bottle as if you're Bush himself in Kennebunkport, Maine around 1976 getting caught driving under the influence.
So anyway, the article makes it pretty clear how important Bush finds education, healthcare, and environmental policy compared to the War on Terror. It's getting about time to toss this bastard out of office.
