SARS

Anybody heard of SARS yet? It stands for South African Revenue Service. It is also now stands for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome, a disease that orginated in China more than half a year ago which has killed over 131 people! It has been spotted in around five countries nationwide and infected at least 3200 people. Sarcasm aside, death is no joke. I just feel it is insane how much this is getting hyped by the media. 3200 sounds like a lot until you stand it up beside the currently estimated world population of about 6.3 billion humans. The bad thing is that Yahoo news has got to be halving SARS with the War On Terror. Sometimes I think SARS is winning the fight for more coverage. A search on Yahoo! News for SARS brings up 1745 results streching back to only March 23, 2003. Forty-two of these articles were posted today! This is just the sort of thing Michael Moore examines in his award winning documentary Bowling For Columbine. I understand the need to know what is going on in the world, and what affects the global community, but do we really need overzealous amounts of fear dredged up by the mass media in a society aready scared to death of people who look like terrorists and powders that might resemble anthrax? I don't think so people. It won't be long before every sniffle and sneeze will strike the fear of SARS into the great hearts of America. Relax people!
