I watched Mr. Deeds tonight. I acquired it in less than an hour on some whim. The movie is about a man named Deeds, played by Adam Sandler, who inherits a fortune from his uncle. The previews made the movie look entertaining, and while it did make me laugh out loud on several occasions, I had a few problems with it.
The first problem was the blatant advertising of Wendy's, and Old Spice. Wendy's is my favorite restaurant, but I had a problem with the fact that Deeds and the business men stopped their helicopter in the middle of nowhere to eat a burger and a frosty. Later on Deeds asks the man about his frosty and he commented that he tried to make one at home but it just wasn't the same. Funny, but useless.
As far as Old Spice goes, it gets even more pathetic. Deeds comments that a fake mugger, set up by the girl reporter to trick Deeds into a hero situation, was wearing more cologne than any man should wear. After being stepped on by Deeds and the woman, the mugger extracts a bottle of cologne from his coat and exclaims, "Damn you Old Spice!" This is another useless aspect of the film which makes me less confident in the producers and directors ability to build a movie instead of a two hour long product promo.
The second set of problems deals with a few smaller aspects. The corny action scenes and ridiculous actors got under my skin. I found the disappearing acts of the character Emilio Lopez, played by John Torturro, hilariously funny, but this was canceled out by his overactive foot fetish. The grown up football player being beat with a belt by his dad for swearing was a bit overboard as well.
The one part I can't complain about is the soundtrack. Adam Sandler singing Space Oddity was quite funny, and the music from the new Dave Mathews CD fit well. Finishing up with a track by Pete Townshend was great too. It looks like most music was played in the credits as well, which is a shame since possibly only one out of ten people actually watch the credits. I always like the music during credits.
So overall, was the theme of love in the movie enough to make me like the movie? No. Not this time. I enjoyed the movie, but it didn't lock me in like most movies. I had questions and comments that took me away from the scope and the world of the movie, and this is just bad news for me. I couldn't just enjoy it as a comedy and let certain details slide. However, you can still watch it. I'm no source of fine opinion.
