In a press conference Thursday, August 14, newly re-elected Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe publicly addressed issues concerning the United States and it's President. President Bush spoke about the Zimbabwe election to the American people on August 13 by saying, "We do not recognize the outcome of the election because we think it is flawed." Following the lead of the European Union last month, Bush placed a ban on Mugabe and his party to keep them from entering the United States. U.S. assets and bank accounts pertaining to Mugabe were also frozen in the process.
Deeply troubled by these actions, the former guerrilla leader, and fifth term Zimbabwe president was given no other choice but to stop acknowledging Bush as the leader of the free world, and spoke of his decision in the open conference. Rushiki Garinumar, on hand staff leader for Mugabe’s political team, gave support to the Presidents arguments. "The [U.S.] election results...did not reflect the true will of the people of the United States and were consequently illegitimate," claimed Garinumar, who continued by saying, "As a result, Mr. Bush may claim victory, but not democratic legitimacy." Mugabe concluded the address by stating, "Bush might say he is the winner, but the United States is the loser with that victory."
